Since taking in Civil War orphans in 1870, Gillis has served Kansas City’s children for 142 years. Today, Gillis helps traumatized children from all over the Kansas City area get the special help they need and a big part of healing their trauma is artistic expression.
Jim Hamil has received many awards for his work including being named the Governor's Artist for the state of Kansas and as the American Royal Artist of the Year. He received the Johnson County Library Foundation's Pinnacle Award for Excellence in the Arts in September, 2003.
The art of both this extraordinary artist and some extraordinary children can be purchased at this art show held on Gillis’s historic Waldo campus. Art prices from $10.00 to $1,000.00.
